I have nothing against the royal family, or anyone who wants to watch the wedding on TV, but… The weather is going to be glorious on the weekend and it is a perfect opportunity to get out! With so many people opting to stay home to watch the Royal Wedding, you’ll have the pick of the places to visit.
Things to do instead of watching the Royal Wedding
When the last royal wedding happened (I have no idea when that was!), we took a trip to Lyme Park and had almost the whole place to ourselves, it was bliss! This time, we are planning to do the same thing – but I’m not telling you where we’ll be as we want it to stay quiet! Honestly, we haven’t actually decided where we’ll be going yet, just that we will have a delicious picnic in tow.
So to get your ideas going, here are 10 places to visit instead of staying cooped up indoors.
Take a ride or walk at Delamere Forest
Whether you get there by car or by train, Delamere Forest has something for everyone. We like to wander around the forest and make our way up to the top to look over the Cheshire countryside. You could also treat yourself to a go on Go Ape or have a go on the Segways as an alternative way to see the grounds.
If you are a fan of forests, but don’t fancy Delamere, then you could head for something a little bit different. How about joining two places into one visit with Macclesfield Forest and Teggs Nose
Scale the hills at Teggs Nose
Even if just for the funny name, Teggs Nose is well worth checking out. With stunning views over Cheshire and the perfect place to picnic, you’re sure to have a great time. With some challenging hills, some history and more, there is plenty to keep you exploring for a good part of the day, and your canine friends can come along too. I think the dogs in our lives would much prefer to be outdoors than inside watching something they don’t understand!
And if you start getting intrigued by the reservoirs and forest n the distance you can either jump in the car or wander over the Macclesfield Forest.
Forest Bathe at Macclesfield Forest
Just to the other side of the reservoir is another magical Cheshire forest waiting to be explored! Macclesfield Forest is a little bit more of a working forest than Delamere, but don’t let that make you think it is any less. There are wonderful canopied walks, winding paths and a route to take you to the reservoir and local pub, should you start feeling peckish.

Pound the prom in Blackpool
If you’re more of a city or seaside person, then Blackpool might be a good bet! Now this place has something for all the family and while it might not be quite as quiet as the forests and hills, you are sure to find a space to enjoy.
The other nice thing about heading up to Blackpool is that you can go on the train meaning that you won’t have to find a car parking space and can enjoy the journey by watching the world go by instead. Whether you want to play in the sand, walk along the prom or have fun on the piers, you’re sure to find something outdoors and exciting!
Take the towpath to the Trafford Centre
Maybe you’re looking for something that is on your doorstep and is that little bit offbeat? How about walking from Deansgate to the Trafford Centre, along the Bridgewater Canal. It is not every day you can walk from town to a big shopping centre. Plus, you can get the bus back with the things that you buy, so no lugging it home.
Picnic in the park
Avoiding the royal wedding doesn’t have to mean heading far away either, you could simply pack a bag with some goodies (and maybe something alcoholic to celebrate being outdoors!) and make your way to a local park. There is nothing like the simple pleasure of enjoying time outdoors with some cheap food and some friends. Taking it slow and having some fun.

Hunt for cats in York
If you fancy something with a bit more direction, how about heading to York to hunt out all of the cats on the York Cat Trail. It is fun for everyone and you get to explore the historic city of York at the same time.
There are loads of things to see and do in York, including boat rides on the river, visiting the York Minster and there is also a National Trust property in the centre of town.
Wander around the Wirral
The Wirral has a lot of hidden gems that you might not have heard of. One of the best is Thors Stone in Thurstaton. Not only do you have access to the woods, you can visit the beach and nature reserve too. It is a varied place for a fun outdoorsey trip.
Avoid UFO abduction at Winter Hill
…if you believe in that kind of thing! I prefer to head to Winter Hill for the views and the history, both of which are in abundance. It isn’t far From Manchester either. If you look to the distance (towards Band on the Wall) from Great Ancoats Street, you might see the aerial up on the hill. That is Winter Hill. A good walk for the legs and views for the eyes, it is a fantastic place to visit!
Clamber in Llandudno
And my final idea for you to ponder over when planning your day trip out instead of watching the royal wedding is taking a trip to Llandudno. I don’t just mean parading the front or walking up the Great Orme, I’m suggesting something a little quieter but with equally spectacular views, the Little Orme.
Whether you decide to take a trip from my ideas, choose your own or even just have some fun in your own garden, I hope you will consider spending some time outdoors instead of being glued to the TV watching the royal wedding. I’m sure you’ll agree that spending time in the great outdoors, getting some exercise and enjoying your free time is far better than sitting in front of a TV watching the royal wedding!
