Did you know that it is “Shop for Travel Day” today? Well, you do now! As I am mid trip planning (we’re off to Valencia in February) I thought it would be fun to share my travel essentials. Whether you’re looking to shop for travel today or whether you’re planning to lighten your load for holidays too, here are my 5 travel essentials.
5 travel essentials
Whether you’re travelling at home or abroad, on foot or by motor, these are some of my favourite travel essentials which you will see with me on every journey I make
1. Reusable water bottle
This is a two-fold item for travel. Not only do you make sure you stay hydrated, but you also prevent plastic pollution. In the UK (and many places abroad) you can find places to top up with tap water for free with the Refill app. And in many European cities, there are plenty of fountains to keep you going with fresh water.
To get through security at the airport, simply empty your bottle of liquid and place it in the tray next to your bag. Once on the other side, head to a cafe or fountain to top up! Many airports now offer a fountain on the other side to make it really easy for you to refill your bottle.
This bottle is from Sigg. They have plenty of pretty and practical option on their website.
2. A powerbank for phone charging
There is nothing like seeing the charge on your phone start to dwindle, especially when you’re using it for your digital travel tickets. So have a reliable powerbank (read my review here) is one of my travel essentials.
I have three which come with us on trips, two of which are from Varta. They are hard-wearing (read: survive landing on concrete) and hold charge for a good length of time. This large one can keep me charged for a whole weekend while taking photos, video and sending messages.
3. Dry Bags
It might sound like a bit of a bizarre addition to your kit if you’re not planning on taking a kayak to your destination, but seriously, dry bags are so useful! We use them in the place of plastic bags, so they prove perfect for carrying our reusable coffee cups and also little bits you need easy access to in your bag. Things like lip balm, plasters or inhalers.
Lomo have so many different kinds and sizes that I am positive that you will find one for your exact needs. We have about 10 different sizes from single coffee cup sized to lunchbox bags. Check out the range here.
4. A Buff
This is where I ruin my run for red products as I don’t have a red Buff, unfortunately. (the red thing wasn’t intentional, it just seems to be a preferred colour of mine)
I won’t go anywhere without one of my Buff’s. They are super handy because they fold small and have so many different functions. From hat to scarf, protection from the sun and wind break. For something so small, they are an incredibly valuable piece of kit to travel with.
There are so many designs and styles to choose from too, so there’s definitely one to match your style.
5. A quality rucksack
Finally on my travel essentials list, it has to be my Kathmandu Transfer Pack. Having a bag which works for you and is comfortable is essential to getting the most from travel. You don’t want to be carrying bits in your hands or feeling the weight on your shoulders. The best kind of travel rucksack is the one you don’t notice you’re wearing and holds everything perfectly.
I got my Transfer Pack last year and it has been with me all over the place since. From my daily reverse commute to going in hold in Poland and wandering for miles in Bilbao and The Hague. I have written a review about it so that you can find out more about why I love it so much.
Of course, this is only a small selection of my travel essentials. If you’d be interested in find out more about my packing and travel kit, let me know. I am looking at sorting out my blog schedule for the year and would love to answer your questions so get going by adding them to the comments and I’ll create posts from them.
Whether you’re buying travel gear or not, here’s to a year filled with fun and adventure!
